Dale Carnegie Leadership Solutions: Focus on Growth
Top performing organizations know that effective leadership is not a luxury; it is essential to their success.
Leaders shape the culture. Effective leaders recognize their actions may have both intended and unintended consequences, so they carefully consider the culture that their actions will help shape. They recognize that by creating a positive climate that inspires team members, they influence them to contribute their best.
Leaders are committed to developing their people and helping people uncover their blind spots. Great leaders are fully committed to the success of their people and are willing to invest time and energy in them. They intuitively see potential and know how to bring out the best in them. They realize that only by bringing out the greatness in their team members can their team demonstrate high potential.
Leaders build and maintain productive relationships. Leadership is not a solitary activity, nor is the focus on the leader; rather it is about how leaders treat the people they work with and how they make people feel about themselves and the work. This allows leaders to influence and be influenced by others to achieve the best possible results. To get things done through other people, leaders must demonstrate that they genuinely care about the people with whom they work. This is what inspires team members to go above and beyond.
Leaders need to give people the self-confidence to be the best version of themselves. People would rather work for someone who builds them up rather than putting them down. They must treat others well and with respect. In most cases, people don’t quit jobs, they quit leaders, especially the ones that don’t care about them and aren’t committed to their growth.
Why This Makes a Difference
We often promote our top-performing employees into leadership positions, assuming they can immediately transform into an effective leader. The fact is that the skillset and mindset are completely different and require different competencies. Organizations face two challenges: losing the work output from the employee’s prior role while gaining a leader who is learning on the job.
Once a new leader has mastered the basics, how do they develop their team to reach their full potential and meet organizational goals? How do they guide them through periods of change? How do they become innovative leaders?
Leadership is about relationships. Dale Carnegie’s unique relationship-centered approach to leadership development provides you with a comprehensive toolkit that will help you become the type of leader required in today’s workforce. This program combines the crucially important hard skills and proven behaviors that leaders need, while also focusing on adopting the right attitudes required to be an engaging leader.
Dale Carnegie’s leadership training targets specific stages of a leader’s development and the skills needed to be successful at each stage.
- Leadership is about relationships with people. Only Dale Carnegie courses are based on the proven Dale Carnegie Human Relations principles that are timeless, universal, and guide everything we do.
- We provide practical skills that can be applied immediately, not just theories, buzzwords, fads or “flavors of the month.”
- We recognize that being a leader means being responsible for more than just yourself, and that is stressful. That’s why we provide practices to help reduce stress and worry.
- Our work is based on the wisdom and expertise gained from developing leaders longer than anyone else in the marketplace.
- Rather than trying to have people be someone they’re not, we help people bring out their greatness—their authentic self and inner leader.
- We provide expertise from the organization that literally wrote the book on influence and building relationships.
- Leaders can’t and shouldn’t try do it all on their own. We deliver the knowledge and skills to help leaders accomplish work through others.
A Path to Leadership Development
Research shows that organizations need and are seeking leaders with competencies to handle the variety of challenges they face in today’s business environment. Specific competencies gain importance depending on where the leader is in his or her development:
- High-potential team members being considered for leadership need to develop and exhibit the self-confidence and interpersonal skills that will be essential for success in their new roles.
- New leaders need help transitioning from doing the work themselves to leading their team. Competencies at this stage of leadership development include using authority appropriate, being self-directed, developing others, and accountability, among others.
- Experienced leaders achieve success for the organization by working to bring out the greatness in their people. They do this by focusing on “next level” competencies that address the types of challenges they face in their roles: leading people through change, delegation that helps develop the people on their teams, innovation, and more.
The Dale Carnegie Leadership Curriculum focuses on competencies appropriate to where a person is his or her leadership development. Using the Dale Carnegie Course as a foundation, a leadership development path might look like this:
Develop Your Leadership Potential: Stop Doing, Start Leading™

The Performance Change Pathway™: A Path to Transformational Change
The Performance Change Pathway™ is Dale Carnegie’s proven design and delivery framework which enables us to deliver transformational performance change in individuals and organizations. Our methodology supports the development of the skills and habits that participants can apply immediately to sustain performance change and drive organizational results.
The Performance Change Pathway™ encompasses five components: Input, Awareness, Experience, Sustainment, and Output. We know that these components are essential to the design and delivery of the learning that changes the way people work together. The pathway provides a hands-on, collaborative process that engages the learner and manager from initial contact through follow-up and support. Throughout the process, participants get the tools they need to:
- Navigate individual and business needs
- Track progress on a regular basis
- Provide coaching and feedback on observable performance
- Discuss how to achieve current and future goals
- Focus on developing strengths and areas of improvement
We believe that learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom, and that it happens over time. Using the Dale Carnegie Human Relations Principles helps open the minds of participants to the need and desire to change. We maximize the opportunity to create the emotional and behavioral change that leads to performance change, the hallmark of Dale Carnegie training.
The Performance Change Pathway™ provides learners the necessary framework to get the support they need to unleash their potential to enhance their lives and the performance of the organization.
What the Journey Looks
The leadership journey begins with a strategic conversation to understand where the participants are today, where they want to be, and what needs to change to get there. These discussions establish the priority for the integration of people and business strategy.
The training experience is designed in either a 3-day or 8-week time-phased format.
Develop Your Leadership Potential: Stop Doing, Start Leading™ and Leadership Training for Results: Unleash Talent in Others™ each include an Awareness Session. The Awareness Session is an interactive, kickoff session held in person or virtually using WebEx. This session will:
- Build engagement, comfort, and trust for the upcoming program
- Set context for business purpose for the program
- Establish parameters for setting goals for professional development and business impact
- Assess learner needs
Leadership Impact Plan
Throughout these courses participants develop their Leadership Impact Plan. At the conclusion of the training each leader comes away with a customized, practical guide for developing their competencies and putting their new leadership skills into action.
This drives the following important business results:
- Increased sales and margins
- Reduced costs and re-work
- Higher productivity
- Lower employee turnover
- More innovation
Innovation Plan (Leadership Training for Results only)
To put the innovation skills from the program into practice, participants develop a detailed plan to enact a needed change. The Innovation Plan is a chance to immediately apply the Dale Carnegie Innovation Process to bring to about a needed change, either as an incremental improvement or a breakthrough opportunity.
Performance Results Description (Leadership Training for Results only)
In addition to the Leadership Impact Plan and the Innovation Plan, another important tool participants take away from Leadership Training for Results: Unleash Talent in Others™ is the Performance Results Description. The PRD is an agreement between an employee and her/his manager about the employee’s contribution to the organization in terms of work quality, productivity, and other performance measures. By developing these descriptions with their direct reports, leaders can help ensure that the focus of their team’s efforts align with organizational goals. Performance expectations are documented so that it’s clear what desired performance looks like for each team member’s position.
The Leadership Impact Plan, Innovation Plan, and Performance Results Description each help sustain the classroom learning by putting newly acquired skills into practice back on the job.
Develop Your Leadership Potential: Stop Doing, Start Leading™ and Leadership Training for Results: Unleash Talent in Others™ each include a Sustainment Session.
To help sustain the momentum and encourage the application of the participant’s Leadership Impact Plan, the classroom experience is followed by a mandatory Sustainment Session. This session can be held in-person or virtually.
In the Sustainment Session, participants:
- Reflect on key concepts presented in the program
- Examine techniques to act with accountability
- Commit to continued development
- Present their Major Benefit Report to their colleagues from the training
The output of the pathway is the realization of the performance change based on the learners’ needs. At this point, participants and managers can see the change in their performance.
The output demonstrates Return on Investment (ROI) and/or an increase in business results. Through continued application of the Leadership Impact Plan, the Innovation Plan, the Performance Results Descriptions, and various sustainability activities, participants hold themselves and each other accountable for the results they want to achieve.
We can show the business, manager, and participant that they are making a difference as their new skills and behaviors are successfully integrated and improving their overall success.
Dale Carnegie Voice of the Customer Surveys
Dale Carnegie is constantly monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of our programs and training solutions and our effectiveness in meeting our client’s expectations. Our Voice of the Customer (VOC) evaluation includes both a Net Promoter Score (NPS) for client satisfaction as well as Reaction, Learning and Behavior questions from the Kirkpatrick Model (new world version). The data from these evaluations is used strategically in our decisions around product quality and trainer delivery for future programs.
Within 48 hours of completing the training program, each participant will be emailed a link to respond to a survey. The survey will take approximately 2 to 5 minutes to complete. This system is completely online to ensure the integrity of the data and real-time reporting. Dale Carnegie will share the results of the survey(s) with your organization, providing you with feedback on the effectiveness of your training investment.
