Over 50 years ago, Dale Carnegie’s Speaking and Influencing Men in Business was re-edited into the best seller, How to Develop Self-Confidence and Influence People by Public Speaking; in the book, Mr. Carnegie writes: “Think success. It is easily in your power to do this. Believe it firmly and you will then do what is necessary to bring success about.”
This Carnegie definition of motivation is so true today. From this motivation come the following key aspects for both success and results:
- Achievement: Doing your best every day is founded in hard work and opportunity. Doing things well and with consistency makes the opportunity happen.
- Recognition: Paying attention to people in a positive way is central to hard working organizations.
- Honesty: Support and feedback go hand-in-hand. Done in the right way, honesty becomes an important tool for motivation.
- Simplicity: The little things give people the best joy. It can come from that pat on the back or that special mention in a meeting.
- Positivity: A smile and a handshake often combine to influence others to do more than what might be required; there is always excellence to be found, when we take the time to look for it.
