When you think of dreams, the first thing that comes to your mind is the kind you have when you are sleeping. However, the meaning goes well beyond that. Dreams are what we want out of life, whether it is that perfect job, a new home, or to raise a family. Each day there is a thought in the back of your mind that gives you a reminder of those dreams, inspiring you to continue your efforts in realizing your dreams. Some people’s dreams are small, like simply obtaining employment, while others have huge and unrealistic dreams. But they are dreams, nonetheless.
In order to realize your dreams, you have to plan out a path to reach them. It is necessary to lay “stepping stones” for that path, and follow each one until you reach your destination. These stepping stones are goals that you must achieve as you go through life, getting you one step closer to obtaining what you dream of. For example, if you dream of owning a new home, your first goal would be save money for a down payment. Once you achieve that goal, you move on to the next one, which would be to find the perfect home. With each goal that you achieve, you get closer to getting the keys to that home.
There is a difference between dreams and goals. You can dream of being the President or winning a huge lottery, but it does not mean that those are dreams you can turn into reality. However, they are still possible. Goals are like those stepping stones, moving you forward a step at a time in order to get what you want out of life. While you can dream anything, no matter how outlandish, your goals must remain realistic. If you set your goals too high and they are unattainable, you will begin to get frustrated and come to a standstill in life.
Keeping your dreams in mind, start with a long-term goal. Ask yourself where you want to be in life ten years from now. Then decide what the first step is in order to get there. Just like walking, you have to go one step at a time. It is important to note that everyone should have a dream in order to create goals and stay motivated. And remember, if you can dream you can be successful.
