When the local chapter of the American Heart Association Sweethearts organization needed a program that would help teach its members goal setting and interview techniques, they turned to Dale Carnegie Training of Birmingham. About 40 young ladies in grades 9-12 recently completed this workshop, according to Nancy Covert, president of Dale Carnegie Training of Birmingham.

The Sweethearts program is affiliated with the American Heart Association and helps connect young ladies with community service opportunities associated with heart diseases, as well as engages them in educational workshops that help create a more well-rounded individual.

This is the second year the organization has teamed with Dale Carnegie Training of Birmingham, according to Sweetheart Guild Co-Chair Suzy Baker. Dale Carnegie Training was chosen based on its presence in the local community and the group’s ability to tailor a program to the Sweethearts’ needs. Many Dale Carnegie programs take place over multiple weeks, but Covert and her team condensed the material down to an informative, three-hour, hands-on workshop.

“Whether our girls are a hostess at a charity event, interviewing for a scholarship or a leadership position in their school or community, they need to prepare themselves: their dress, their language and their knowledge for the task at hand,” Baker said.

“These girls understand the value of their resume and how competitive it is even at this time in their lives,” she said.

The workshop focused on techniques like making a good first impression, interview skills, eye contact, posture, and more. “We’re real fortunate to have them [Dale Carnegie Training of Birmingham] willing to work with our girls,” Baker said. “We value community service as the balance to life’s pursuits, and we hope we are in some way developing tomorrow’s community leaders.”

“Dale Carnegie Training of Birmingham recognizes the importance of developing tomorrow’s leaders, and we have a great appreciation for the impact the American Heart Association has on our community,” Covert said. “We are honored to partner with the American Heart Association Sweethearts to help these amazing young ladies grow as leaders.”
