Empowering young women the focus of upcoming Huntsville event

January 24, 2011

Empowering today’s youth is a mission that we take very seriously here at Dale Carnegie Training of Birmingham, and the Executive Women International of Hunstville aims to do just that. This organization of professional women will hold “Cruisin’ the Road to Success,” a conference for young women on Feb. 19.

Aimed at grades eight to 12, the event will be held at the Mark Smith Conference Center at ADTRAN. Huntsville native and three-time Olympic swimming medalist Margaret Hoeizer will keynote the luncheon, according to The Huntsville Times.

“We bring them in and basically give them a full day of training, give them the resources so they can find scholarship money and financial aid,” as well as ideas for future career paths, Vanessa Akins, president of EWI of Huntsville, told the Times. EWI is a worldwide association for business professionals and their firms.

Speakers will cover topics ranging from what they need to take in high school to prepare them for college and how to manage their finances once they get there. Other workshops will address personal appearance and how to make a good first impression in an interview, as well as what kind of volunteer work or community service is available.

Proceeds from the conference go to the EWI scholarship fund — the local chapters award two scholarships each year, one to a high school student and one to an adult who’s starting or going back to college.

This is a very good project. Although its only one day. By the end of the day, hopefully the students have gained a lot of information that will ready them for college.
