Our Barons just got a little bit closer to home.

According to the Birmingham Business Journal, the Birmingham Barons baseball team has signed a tentative agreement to move downtown. Stan Logan, managing partner of the Barons, said details are not yet finalized and construction is in the drafting phase.

According to the Journal, the city of Birmingham lined up a funding mechanism for a downtown baseball park in October using a lodging tax increase of 3.5 percent. The team is currently in a lease agreement with the city of Hoover.

Mayor William Bell has projected a timeline for completion of construction of the downtown baseball park as 18 to 24 months.

The park could conceivably be ready for play by the start of the 2012 minor league season.

So we’re curious what you think: Is this a good move for the team?
