The verdict’s in: You’re stressed out, Birmingham.

But you probably already knew that, right? With issues like library cuts, job cuts, and nearly 13% of Birmingham area homeowners “underwater,” according to The Birmingham News, it might be easy to see why our city made the Portfolio.com and bizjournals list.

Birmingham is the 9th most stressful market, according to the study, which rated cities on factors such as unemployment, income growth, poverty, death rates, sunshine, unhealthy air, robberies, murders, commuting and housing costs. The following are the top 10 most stressful cities:

  1. Detroit
  2. L.A.
  3. Cleveland
  4. California’s Riverside metro
  5. St. Louis
  6. New York City
  7. New Orleans
  8. Chicago
  9. Birmingham
  10. Miami-Fort Lauderdale

Curious about the least stressed? They shake out as follows:

  1. Salt Lake City
  2. Virginia Beach-Norfolk
  3. Minneapolis-St. Paul
  4. Raleigh
  5. Austin
  6. Oklahoma City
  7. Denver
  8. San Antonio
  9. Kansas City
  10. Phoenix

But just because this study says we’re stressed out, it doesn’t mean we don’t have a lot to be happy about and thankful for. So we’re curious: What do you love about living in Birmingham? Leave your thoughts in the comment section.
